University of Waterloo National Math Competition

University of Waterloo National Math Competition.

Hello Parents and Students:

Every year the University of Waterloo holds a National Math competition for all grades. The contests are named after famous mathematicians as follows:

  • Grade 7 – Gauss competition
  • Grade 8 – Gauss competition (at a higher standard than grade 7)
  • Grade 9 – Pascal competition

The contest dates this year are as follows:

  • Grade 9 (Pascal Competition) – Wednesday 26th February 2025
  • Grades 7&8 (Gauss competition) – Wednesday 14th May 2025

The competition takes place any time during the day on those dates and usually takes place in Mr. Carter’s room in Room 218. We have a school account and with the University of Waterloo and we order the contests in advance once we know numbers. It is important that you let Mr. Carter know that you want to participate so he can reserve you a contest paper but the school will pay the $5 entry fee.

The University of Waterloo has a web site that displays the past contests (and solutions). The contests promote a particular way of thinking about the mathematics and the best way to practice and prepare is to practice these past contests on through the link below. Each student is given one hour for each contest in a multiple choice format.
